About Community Exchange

A civic platform built by and for Houstonians. One place to learn, get help, and take action in your community.

What is Community Exchange?

Community Exchange is the front door to civic life in Houston. We bring together community services, elected officials, local policies, volunteer opportunities, learning resources, and neighborhood data into one place -- so that anyone, regardless of experience or background, can find what they need and figure out how to get involved.

This is not a directory. It is a choose-your-own-adventure. Every page gives you a next step. Every resource connects to something else. You can start anywhere and discover your own path.

Who built this?

Community Exchange is a project of The Change Lab, a civic practice fiscally sponsored by Impact Hub Houston. The Change Lab was founded in June 2025 by David A. Brown, Director of Possibility, with a simple belief: most people care deeply about their communities but have no idea where to start.

We build tools that meet people where they are -- overwhelmed, curious, or ready to move -- and give them a clear path forward.

Our philosophy

Everything we build follows one emotional arc:

Overwhelmed
>
Capable
>
Connected
>
Active

Most civic platforms start at “Active” and wonder why nobody shows up. We start at “Overwhelmed” because that is where most people are. We believe every community already has the assets, knowledge, and people it needs. Our job is to make those connections visible and accessible.

The 7 Pathways

Every piece of content on Community Exchange belongs to one of seven pathways -- broad themes that organize civic life into areas that matter to real people:

Taking Care (Health)
Raising Houston (Kids and Families)
Where We Live (Neighborhood)
Who Decides (Democracy and Voice)
Making It Work (Economy and Money)
The Ground Beneath Us (Environment)
All of Us (Culture and Connection)
