Raising Houston
Childcare Resources for Houston Families
By The Change Lab -- via manual_seed -- Apr 18, 2026
Overview
Childcare costs can equal rent for Houston families, making it one of the biggest financial pressures for working parents. But there are options. The Texas Workforce Commission offers childcare subsidies to eligible working families with children under 13. Head Start and Early Head Start serve children from birth through age five at no cost to families. Houston ISD and several other districts offer free pre-K programs for four-year-olds. This guide explains how to apply for each program, what the eligibility requirements are, and what to expect from the process.
