Houston Food Bank expanding mobile pantry to 12 new neighborhoods

Overview

Families in twelve Houston neighborhoods will get fresh groceries delivered right to their streets starting this month. The Houston Food Bank is bringing mobile pantries to communities where getting to regular food distribution sites is hard.

The mobile pantries carry fresh produce, meat, and shelf-stable groceries. Volunteers set up in parking lots, community centers, and other local spots. People can walk up and get what their families need without traveling across town.

The new stops include Greenspoint, Alief, East End, Sunnyside, Fifth Ward, and Northside. Six other communities will also get regular visits. The food bank has been running mobile pantries since 2010 in areas where partner food pantries are hard to reach.

Mobile pantries are free and open to anyone who needs food. People don't need to prove income or bring paperwork. Families can come as often as the pantry visits their neighborhood. Each visit serves about 200 families. The trucks arrive at scheduled times and stay until the food runs out.

Most stops happen once or twice a month on the same day and time. People should bring their own bags if possible, but bags are available. The Houston Food Bank website lists all mobile pantry locations and schedules. People can also call 713-223-3700 to find the nearest stop.
