Overview
More than half of Houston families rent their homes, and many don't know the legal protections Texas law gives them. Understanding these rights helps people stay in their homes when landlords try to evict unfairly or ignore needed repairs.
Texas law requires landlords to follow specific steps before evicting tenants. They must give proper notice and follow legal procedures. Landlords cannot evict people for complaining about unsafe conditions or asking for repairs.
Renters have clear rights around security deposits. Landlords must return deposits within 30 days after move-out, minus any lawful charges. They must provide a detailed list of any money taken from the deposit. When rental properties have health and safety problems, landlords must fix them. Renters can take action when landlords ignore repair requests for broken heating, plumbing leaks, or electrical issues.
Lone Star Legal Aid offers free legal help to Houston renters facing housing problems. People can call their hotline at 713-652-0077 to speak with an attorney about eviction cases, deposit disputes, or repair issues. Walk-in hours happen at their downtown Houston office on weekday mornings. Renters should bring their lease, any written notices from landlords, and photos of repair problems when getting help.
