Overview
Housing costs are rising fast across our country. Nearly every nation faces a shortage of affordable homes. Our community needs to understand why this is happening and what we can do about it.
These nine books, podcasts, and movies explain the housing crisis in simple terms. They share real stories from people who lost their homes. They also show ideas for change that our community can support.
Three books make the topic easier to understand. "And Housing for All" by Maria Foscarinis tells how the crisis started and how to fix it. "Dwelling" by Emily Hunt Kivel follows a woman who gets evicted in New York and ends up living in a giant cowboy boot in Texas. "In Defense of Housing" looks at how treating homes like products instead of basic needs creates problems.
Three podcasts dive deeper into housing issues. "Sold Out" explores rental problems in California and how climate change affects housing. "A Tiny Plot" follows homeless people in Oakland as they build their own community. "Beyond Four Walls" shares policy solutions and ways to strengthen neighborhoods.
Three films show housing challenges on screen. "Slumlord Millionaire" exposes corrupt landlords in New York City. "Forced to Move" looks at climate refugees who lose their homes to disasters. "The Last Black Man in San Francisco" tells the story of gentrification pushing out longtime residents.
Knowledge helps our community work together for better housing. These resources give us the facts we need to support good policies and programs in Houston and beyond.
